Understanding the Most Common Faucet Types

Most homeowners aren't familiar with the different faucet types until it's time to repair them or get a new one. In general, faucets can be categorized into the four most common types.

Read more to learn about the design of each faucet and its advantages and disadvantages.

Ball faucet

The ball faucet is the most common choice for kitchens. Homeowners can identify it by a handle placed on the ball-shaped cap sitting on the faucet spout. The metal or plastic ball design controls the single handle and helps adjust the temperature and the water flow.

The ball-shaped cap consists of slots, O-rings, and spring-loaded seals. Because of the number of parts, these faucets are complicated and leak more than other types. For that reason, homeowners should keep a close eye on them. If the tap starts to leak, call a plumber to deal with the problem as soon as possible.

Disc faucet

Disc faucets are relatively new inventions in the faucet industry. Due to their ceramic design, they're also the most durable. These faucets consist of single levers sitting on the cylindrical body. Inside the tap, there's a pressure balance cartridge. The cold and hot water mix here and the temperature can be controlled with the handle that moves from side to side. Generally speaking, these faucets are the most expensive, but they're long-lasting and don't break often.

Compression faucet

Compression faucets aren't a common choice nowadays, but they were a standard in older homes. Although they're the cheapest type, homeowners avoid purchasing them because they tend to leak and require a lot of maintenance. These faucets consist of two separate handles that need to be tightened or loosened for the water to flow. Each of the handles controls the hot or the cold temperature, so it takes some time to set the perfect temperature.

The main issue with these faucets is their rubber washer. With repeated use, it can deform or even break. Because cracked washers can't seal inlets, leaks aren't uncommon with these faucets. It's worth noting that replacing the damaged on broken parts isn't expensive. That's why many homeowners still keep them in their homes.

Cartridge faucet

To the untrained eye, cartridge faucets are similar to compression faucets. They also have two handles for temperature control and water flow. But the main difference is in how these handles operate. Namely, with the compression faucet, you need to tighten the handle for the water to flow. The handles on cartridge faucets turn much more easily and without any special effort required.

Unlike compression faucets, their cartridge design makes them more durable. On top of that, it's easy to fix any malfunctions. In most cases, purchasing a new cartridge to replace the old worn-out cartridge can treat the leaking problem. Talk to your plumber if you're considering a new faucet or having an old one repaired.
