How to Care for Laundry Room Plumbing
Even though many homeowners use their laundry room regularly, the plumbing there tends to be neglected. As a result, the appliances and plumbing can break down if not maintained regularly, resulting in high repair costs. Please keep reading to learn how to care for the laundry room plumbing.
Always check the hoses
Washing machines are linked to valves through hoses, which may consist of rubber or plastic. There are usually two hoses connected to washers, one for hot water and the other for cold water.
Cheap, low-cost hoses are known to deteriorate after extended use. So many homeowners replace them with stainless steel hoses, usually braided types that last even longer.
Even then, examining the hoses for any sign of wear and tear is prudent. Early detection can prevent floods or other accidents.
Check any exposed pipes
Regularly check any exposed pipes around the washing machine or sinks. These pipes may burst or leak if they sustain too much damage. Some become loose, but it’s possible to secure them with cables or zip ties and prevent excessive movement. Too much action can result in serious leaks or even flooding.
Install a sensor valve
It may already be too late if one only becomes aware of a leak or flooding when one arrives home. Instead, consider installing a sensor valve on the water source. This device will shut off the water instantly if it detects leaks.
Flush the P-trap
A P-trap is found near drains, shaped like a U, and placed lower than the drainage pipe. This pipe holds water to form a seal, preventing foul odors from escaping into the laundry room and making the place smell bad. If the drain isn’t used often, the water can evaporate and let gasses in.
Fortunately, a solution anyone can perform is pouring a bucket of water into the drain. Doing so replenishes the P-trap’s water supply and restores the seal.
Switch to an efficient washing machine
Older washing machine models may be resilient, but few are more efficient than newer devices. Consider replacing a worn washer with a modern product rated for efficiency. These appliances are usually designed to use less water and clean clothes properly.
Besides saving water, lowered water usage can extend the lifespans of pipes and hoses. This results in fewer repairs, though regular checkups are still recommended.
Uncoil lines
Hoses, cables, and pipes perform best in a curved or straight position. Therefore, these lines should not be tangled or looped. In this way, water can flow without interruption or pressure buildup.
Contact a professional for assistance
While performing checks is helpful, only a professional plumber can install appliances or repair pipes adequately. Feel free to contact a reputable plumbing company for assistance. They’ll be happy to help.
